The last line, " and people disappear" reveals the horror the speaker expresses at the invasion of technology to replace intimate human connections. The smiling speed train mocks the speaker's lost hope for someone to slow down and take a moment with him. Escalators and elevators whisk people away from him. The fear of the bridges is that they will no longer connect people to one another. The speaker has been left alone to lsment because everyone else is on board the 2:15 express.
